Happy Body Slow Brain Live Review at the Knitting Factory on June 4th 2011

Matt Fazzi introduces his new band known as “Happy Body Slow Brain” with the amazing performance they put on at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York on June 4th, 2011. Performing their debut album, “Dreams of Water” HBSB’s talent laid within many instrumental fields, capturing their audience with their amazing team work, ‘brotherly love’, jammy guitar riffs, smooth keyboard action and flawless harmonies. All of the guys were really into the performance and were all smiles during the set. Songs like “Everything You Know” and “Sweet Home Alabama” will put rhythm into the most unrhythmic. They make that known with their intense live performance. I can definitely say that HBSB is a band that sounds just as good live, as they do on the album. You should definitely check them out

Gabriel the Marine live review at the Knitting Factory June 4th 2011

Gabriel the Marine puts on a damn good show. All of the guys were very into their instruments, which I love. It doesn’t look good when your instrument-playing makes eating noodles look more interesting. Boring and semi-enthused. Heck, they were so into the groove that the violinist had a boner! Not joking! They played 3 new songs. They all sound fantastic, but the 2nd really stood out to me. It’s safe to say that when you walk into a room where GTB is performing, it will surely catch your attention. Beautiful melodies and awesome drums and don’t forget the wicked violin to smoothly weave all of the sounds together to create one hell of a song.

“New York City born and raised, Alex York grew up to the classic tunes of music legends David Bowie, Queen, The Beatles, and Blondie—all the while soaking up the fresh stylings of his own generation’s pacesetters.” City and Sounds had the opportunity to attend York’s latest event at The Studio-Webster Hall on 6/23/2011. He performed with other great acts such as: Cris Cab, Roderick, & Buckwheat Groats. Alex defiantly put on a show that night rocking his all white vest and pants. With the ratio of more girls to guys, everyone was getting into York’s “hard-hitting pop” music. Alex debuted his newest song” Dance Floor” for the first time in New York City. The crowd enjoyed it and were jamming and getting down and funky. Alex also covered Britney Spear’s song “Womanizer” which was awesome! As a surprise York gave out his new shirts with him looking like an “anime character” to the crowd and free song download cards. Alex York sure knows how to keep the energy going and that is what makes a music artist. York also donates 20% of his merch earnings to Japanese disaster relief which is really nice of him. Finally an artist who thinks of others! You should check him out and some of the photos our photographer Kevin Aranibar took.

Breanne Düren 6/23/11, a set on Flickr.

Breanne Duren is a singer / songwriter from Burnsville, Minnesota. She joins Adam Young in Owl City as his keyboardist and back vocalist. Aside from performing with him, she opened the show at Roseland Ballroom on June 23rd 2011 with her own music. Every time I’ve been there, this being my 3rd time, it becomes very cold. Now that isn’t always a bad thing. They’ve got good air conditioning; it was just a little too much for the temperature at the time. What glued everything together well is how energetic the crowd was. I guess you need intense air conditioning for the kind of sweat these people broke. Breanne brings happiness and fun into the room with her pleasant lyrics and sunny voice. A cute one, she is. “I love to dance. I just want to groove a little real quick!” she says as she’s halfway into her set. She requested that the crowd dance a little because it just feels good. Although I could tell not many people already knew her songs, everyone was very into it as her set progressed. A great performance was put on by Breanne and her fellow band members. Check out photos our photographer Kevin Aranibar took!

Underoath 7-7-11, a set on Flickr.
City and Sounds had the chance to attend the Illuminatour with Underoath and other great acts.   I’ve seen Underoath before and I can honestly say that I have yet to experience their perform in a form of mediocrity. Underoath played at The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale, NY and definitely brought a live, energetic crowd and an equally pleasing performance to the table (to my knowledge). Even though I feel like the setlist was an okay mixture of new and old, I still wasn’t very pleased with it. My favourite song they played was Emergency Broadcast: The End Is Near. Although I wish they would have played A Moment Suspended In Time as well as more songs on their 3rd album, “Lost In the Sound Of Separation”. I loved the crowd’s reactions to the older songs. Underoath would play a sample and fade into the next song. Once the crowd realized what song it was, they would all jump up and go insane! It’s usually like that when bands play their ‘old hits’. The openers (Let Live, Stray From the Path, Times of Grace) weren’t really to my liking but they indeed put on a good performance. REVIEW: SCREAM IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT @ GRAMERCY THEATRE

Mike Champa of For All Those Sleeping

Review by Isis Bouemboue
Photos by Alex Siracusano

From smaller bands such as Hands like Houses and Volumes, to the bigger bands like Oceano and The Acacia Strain, Every band on this tour definitely lived up to the tour’s name, “Scream It Like You Mean It.” They screamed… and they meant it! From start to finish, fans watched as each of their favorite bands took the stage at Gramercy Theatre. The first band on the bill, Hands Like Houses, made an honorable performance that night. Vocalist, Trenton Woodley, had improved significantly vocally since their first show in the states not even two months ago. The band put on a good show but that was about the extent of it.  Volumes kept the crowd excited, and fans were eager to see their performance. They gave the kids what they were looking for, a heavy, badass, fast paced set. The crowd was going bonkers! The set for sure wasn’t a let down. For All Those Sleeping surprised the crowd with their cover of hit song “You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift, giving everyone a moment to break away from the overall heaviness of the tour and bust a move or two! Their set contained only songs from their new album “Outspoken”, which disappointed some older FATS fans, but made up for it in their performance. Their swagger on stage kept everyone’s attention and excited for more. In Fear and Faith tried to keep the energy up. Being one of the softer bands on the bill, they had a hard time connecting with the crowd, That were there for the likes of Oceano and The Acacia Strain. Oceano Brought the house down, starting hard and finishing even harder with one of their older hits “District Of Misery.” The crowd went completely insane. Oceano definitely put the fear of god in everyone’s heart in the best way possible. Closing the show was everyone’s favorite, The Acacia Strain. From start to finish the crowd took all their left over energy and doubled it! Fans went wild at the end of the set, begging for an encore and fortunately, they got what they wanted. Great way to end the night. The Acacia Strain never disappoints.

Josh Scogin of The Chariot

The band that definitely stood out the most that night was the 4 piece mathcore band, The Chariot. From frontman, Josh Scogin, to drummer, David Kennedy, Not one member fell short of energy and creativity on that stage. Fans watched as replacement bassist, Stephen Harrison, jumped off the stage and into the crowd to play a whole song in the pit. This guy was fearless. Then drummer David Kennedy ended the show with a sweet tasteful solo, as Josh disassembled his drumset right under him. The set was amazing, and kept me on my toes, not knowing what to expect from the band. They’ve raised the standards for what to expect from an amazing live show.
Overall The “Scream It Like You Mean It Tour” was definitely a good show, and the bands gave the fans what they wanted. A perfect night to throw down.
