Alex york 6/22/11, a set on Flickr.

“New York City born and raised, Alex York grew up to the classic tunes of music legends David Bowie, Queen, The Beatles, and Blondie—all the while soaking up the fresh stylings of his own generation’s pacesetters.” City and Sounds had the opportunity to attend York’s latest event at The Studio-Webster Hall on 6/23/2011. He performed with other great acts such as: Cris Cab, Roderick, & Buckwheat Groats. Alex defiantly put on a show that night rocking his all white vest and pants. With the ratio of more girls to guys, everyone was getting into York’s “hard-hitting pop” music. Alex debuted his newest song” Dance Floor” for the first time in New York City. The crowd enjoyed it and were jamming and getting down and funky. Alex also covered Britney Spear’s song “Womanizer” which was awesome! As a surprise York gave out his new shirts with him looking like an “anime character” to the crowd and free song download cards. Alex York sure knows how to keep the energy going and that is what makes a music artist. York also donates 20% of his merch earnings to Japanese disaster relief which is really nice of him. Finally an artist who thinks of others! You should check him out and some of the photos our photographer Kevin Aranibar took.

Breanne Düren 6/23/11, a set on Flickr.

Breanne Duren is a singer / songwriter from Burnsville, Minnesota. She joins Adam Young in Owl City as his keyboardist and back vocalist. Aside from performing with him, she opened the show at Roseland Ballroom on June 23rd 2011 with her own music. Every time I’ve been there, this being my 3rd time, it becomes very cold. Now that isn’t always a bad thing. They’ve got good air conditioning; it was just a little too much for the temperature at the time. What glued everything together well is how energetic the crowd was. I guess you need intense air conditioning for the kind of sweat these people broke. Breanne brings happiness and fun into the room with her pleasant lyrics and sunny voice. A cute one, she is. “I love to dance. I just want to groove a little real quick!” she says as she’s halfway into her set. She requested that the crowd dance a little because it just feels good. Although I could tell not many people already knew her songs, everyone was very into it as her set progressed. A great performance was put on by Breanne and her fellow band members. Underoath 7-7-11, a set on Flickr.
City and Sounds had the chance to attend the Illuminatour with Underoath and other great acts.   I’ve seen Underoath before and I can honestly say that I have yet to experience their perform in a form of mediocrity. Underoath played at The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale, NY and definitely brought a live, energetic crowd and an equally pleasing performance to the table (to my knowledge). Even though I feel like the setlist was an okay mixture of new and old, I still wasn’t very pleased with it. My favourite song they played was Emergency Broadcast: The End Is Near. Although I wish they would have played A Moment Suspended In Time as well as more songs on their 3rd album, “Lost In the Sound Of Separation”. I loved the crowd’s reactions to the older songs. Underoath would play a sample and fade into the next song. Once the crowd realized what song it was, they would all jump up and go insane! It’s usually like that when bands play their ‘old hits’. The openers (Let Live, Stray From the Path, Times of Grace) weren’t really to my liking but they indeed put on a good performance.
